Filing a homestead exemption won't affect your credit report

Dear Max,

My credit is in excellent standing; however, I want to file a homestead exemption. Will this negatively impact my credit?

- QMC

Dear QMC,

Filing a homestead exemption for tax purposes will not affect your credit report in any way.

Your credit report only includes information about your credit and debt relationships. In terms of public records, that includes only three things: bankruptcy, monetary judgments, and tax liens.

Bankruptcy relieves you of debts you owe. Judgments are debts owed as a result of a court ruling, and tax liens are debts owed to the government.

A homestead exemption is a public record for homeowners that provides some tax benefits. I am not a tax expert, so would recommend you talk to your county tax assessor, an equivalent official, or your tax accountant about the benefits of a homestead exemption.

Thanks for asking.
